    Rheumatoid Arthritis; An Acupuncture Approach

    Date Published: 18 Feb, 2019

At our Gold Coast acupuncture clinic, patient comfort and rehabilitation are our priorities.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), is multisystem, chronic inflammatory disease which presents with acute and chronic pain. When left untreated it can impede physical function and create joint destruction, which often leads to depression and lowered vitality.

Conventional treatment of RA often prescribes pain relief medication, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, glucocorticoids and disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, often leaving the patient with unwanted side-effects.

In a systematic review published in 2018, the effectiveness of acupuncture on pain, physical function and heal-related quality of life in patients with rheumatoid arthritis was assessed.

    Musculoskeletal Pain Management

Almost 1000 patients were included in the studies with disease duration between 3 months to 35 years. The groups treated with acupuncture displayed better results in pain relief, DAS28 (Rheumatoid arthritis, disease activity score), health related quality of life and health assessment questionnaire, when compared to those only using conventional drug therapy.

Whilst future randomised controlled trails are always warranted, this systematic review has highlighted the value of acupuncture for those patients with RA.

If you or someone you know is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, please make a booking to see how we can assist you by calling 07 5531 6461 or book online here. A treatment plan will be explained by your practitioner on your first appointment.
