Blood deficiency or the condition, Anemia, has long been treated within Traditional Chinese Medicine. In our current society it is often that young women within a reproductive age (15-49) are likely to experience blood deficiency.
In Western Medicine, Anemia is often treated as an iron deficiency or a Vitamin B12 deficiency, not necessarily a blood deficiency. In Traditional Chinese Medicine we look at blood deficiency (Xue Xu) a little differently. In Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine the focus is more on the lack of blood or blood volume than what is actually in your blood (like a blood test at your GP would show). Think of it like if we normally have around 5 litres of blood, with blood deficiency you may only have 3.5 litres.
Here at Haynes Acupuncture on the Gold Coast we can help you understand what might be happening in your body. Some of the common signs and symptoms that are associated with blood deficiency are:
- Pale complexion
-
Dull lips and nails
-
Dizziness
-
Blurred vision
-
Numbness of the limbs
-
Palpitation
While you may just experience some of these symptoms, there are often certain conditions associated with blood deficiency, these are:
- Circulation problems in the extremities
- Anxiety
- Insomnia and sleep disorders
- Inflammation over the whole body that can’t be reduced
- Fibromyalgia
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- POTS (postural orthostatic tachicardia syndrome)
- Menstruation problems like amenorrhoea
Chinese Medicine treatments focus on herbal medicine as well as food and diet to build up blood in your system. Our herbal medicine is rich in iron and food such as chicken, beef, liver, eggs, octopus and squid are foods that will help strengthen your blood.
