Using Acupuncture for Ulcerative ColitisUlcerative Colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease that is most common in younger adults ranging anywhere from 20 to 49 years. It is accompanied with symptoms of rectal bleeding, bloody diarrhoea, abdominal pains and cramps and systemic symptoms varying in degrees.

Ulcerative Colitis patient’s quality of life is often negatively impacted due to the lengthy disease course along with its frequent reoccurring nature. As a result of the harsh nature of the disease, people often seek out alternative treatments such as Acupuncture to assist them in mitigating symptoms.

A recent 2020 meta-analysis sought out to establish how effective acupuncture treatment was in UC patients in comparison and combination with conventional medicine. The researchers based their results on clinical effects such as improvement of clinical symptoms, colonoscopy results and stool examination results. For conventional medicine, the researchers used two types of drugs that are commonly used for diseases related to the bowel, mesalazine and sulfasalazine.

Using Acupuncture Vs Conventional Medicine for Ulcerative Colitis

They found that acupuncture treatment alone was 1.19 times more clinically effective than the combination of both conventional medicine drugs together within the control group.

Acupuncture with Conventional Medicine

They found that acupuncture treatments and the combination of mesalazine (conventional medicine)  was 1.25 times more likely to produce clinical effects than just through taking mesalazine alone.

Adverse effects

The researchers found no significant difference in adverse effects in the acupuncture group or the control group.

The conclusion of the meta-analysis identified that acupuncture alone or in combination with conventional medicine could have a positive impact on patients clinical effects than from conventional medicine alone.
